‘Stay Away from SaPa and Sharab’: Yogi Adityanath Attacks Samajwadi Party Ahead of UP Elections 2027

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a sharp political attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) on October 8, 2026, warning young people to stay away from what he described as two dangers: sharab (liquor) and SaPa, his abbreviated reference to the Samajwadi Party.
Adityanath made the remarks at a programme in Lucknow where appointment letters were distributed to 470 sportspersons selected for recruitment into the Uttar Pradesh Police under the skilled-players quota.
The chief minister used the occasion to highlight his government's recruitment policies and criticise the previous SP administration, bringing employment, youth opportunities and political accountability into focus ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Yogi Adityanath Criticises the Samajwadi Party
Addressing the newly recruited sportspersons, Adityanath said liquor and the Samajwadi Party were complementary dangers that had harmed Uttar Pradesh. He urged young people to remain cautious of both.
The chief minister also accused the previous SP government of creating an identity crisis for the state and its youth. His remarks continued the BJP's criticism of the Samajwadi Party's record in governance and employment.
Adityanath alleged that during the earlier administration, candidates seeking government jobs depended on connections to Saifai, the home area associated with the Samajwadi Party's founding Yadav family, or on sifarish, meaning recommendations from influential people.
These statements reflect the chief minister's criticism of the previous government and should be understood as political allegations.
Recruitment and Employment Take Centre Stage
The appointment of 470 sportspersons to the Uttar Pradesh Police was central to the programme. Adityanath said the recruitment process had not been influenced by recommendations, financial transactions or the dominance of any syndicate.
He contrasted his government's approach with what he alleged were practices under previous administrations. The chief minister also referred to the importance of recognising sporting talent and providing opportunities to candidates through recruitment under the skilled-players quota.
Addressing the recruits, he encouraged them to maintain the discipline and commitment they had demonstrated as athletes while serving in uniform.
Employment remains a significant political issue in Uttar Pradesh, particularly among young voters preparing to enter the workforce. Recruitment examinations, government vacancies, transparency in selection and access to stable employment are likely to feature prominently in political discussions ahead of the next Assembly election.
Adityanath Targets the SP's PDA Slogan
The chief minister also criticised the Samajwadi Party's PDA political slogan, which stands for Pichhde, Dalit and Alpsankhyak — backward classes, Dalits and minorities.
Adityanath sarcastically described PDA as Pradesh Dubao Alliance, a political phrase suggesting that the opposition alliance would harm the state's progress.
The exchange reflects the competing political narratives of the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. The SP uses its PDA formulation to emphasise representation of backward classes, Dalits and minorities, while the BJP has challenged the opposition's claims and highlighted its own governance and development agenda.
The competing claims will continue to be part of the political debate as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
Political Context Ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Elections
The remarks come as political parties increasingly focus on their governance records and proposed priorities ahead of the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
The BJP is highlighting recruitment, development and administrative changes under its government. The Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, has been positioning itself around social representation, employment and criticism of the state government's policies.
Adityanath's latest comments add to the ongoing exchange between the ruling BJP and the opposition SP. The chief minister's allegations about recruitment under the previous government and the opposition's claims about representation and governance remain matters of political debate.
As the election approaches, voters will be able to assess the parties' claims against their records, published policies and proposed plans for employment and development.
For now, the episode underscores how youth employment, recruitment transparency and competing social coalitions are shaping political messaging in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
