Mayawati BSP Rally October 9: Can BSP Rebuild Its UP Political Base?

The Bahujan Samaj Party is preparing for a major political show of strength in Lucknow on October 9, as party chief Mayawati seeks to rebuild the organisation ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
The rally will mark the death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram and comes at a critical moment for the party.
Once a major political force in Uttar Pradesh and a significant national player, the BSP has faced a series of electoral setbacks in recent years.
The Lucknow gathering is therefore being viewed as more than an annual political event. It will also serve as a test of the party’s organisational mobilisation.
BSP Faces Electoral Challenge
The BSP’s political influence in Uttar Pradesh has declined considerably compared with the period when it regularly formed governments or played a decisive role in Assembly elections.
Mayawati now faces the challenge of rebuilding the party’s voter base while preventing further erosion of support.
The 2027 Assembly election gives the BSP an important opportunity to attempt a political recovery.
The party will have to rebuild its organisation at the grassroots level and reconnect with voters across Uttar Pradesh.
Akash Anand’s Role
The BSP has also brought Akash Anand back into a prominent organisational role.
Mayawati has indicated that Anand will play an important part in youth outreach and state-level campaigning.
His role could become increasingly significant as the party attempts to connect with younger voters.
At the same time, Mayawati has retained ultimate authority over important decisions, including candidate selection and ticket distribution.
This indicates that the party’s leadership structure remains firmly centred around her.
Kanshi Ram’s Legacy
The October 9 rally will also allow the BSP to reinforce its ideological connection with Kanshi Ram.
Kanshi Ram built the BSP around the political mobilisation of Dalits and other marginalised communities.
His political legacy remains central to the party’s identity.
Mayawati is expected to use the occasion to remind supporters of the BSP’s historical role while outlining the party’s strategy for the coming Assembly election.
Can the BSP Return?
The key question is whether the BSP can convert a large rally into sustained electoral mobilisation.
A successful rally would demonstrate that the party still has an organisational network capable of bringing supporters together.
However, rebuilding electoral influence will require more than crowd mobilisation.
The BSP will need to identify candidates, strengthen booth-level organisation and establish a clear political narrative for 2027.
It will also have to compete with the BJP, SP and potentially other alliances for the same voter groups.
A Crucial Test Ahead of 2027
The October 9 event comes at an important stage of Uttar Pradesh politics.
The BJP is already projecting confidence about the next Assembly election, while the SP is working to consolidate its PDA social coalition.
For the BSP, the immediate priority is to demonstrate that it remains politically relevant.
The Lucknow rally will therefore be closely watched for both its turnout and its political messaging.
Mayawati’s ability to combine the BSP’s traditional social base with a renewed youth and organisational strategy could determine whether the party enters the 2027 election as a marginal force or a serious contender.
