History
Punjab has a long political history dating back to the period before Indian independence. Following Partition in 1947, the Indian part of Punjab was reorganised as the political and administrative boundaries of the region evolved. In 1956, the Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) was merged with Punjab. The major reorganisation of the state took place in 1966 on linguistic and administrative grounds. Haryana was created as a separate state, Chandigarh became a Union Territory and certain hill areas were transferred to Himachal Pradesh. The Punjab Legislative Assembly is a unicameral legislature. The Assembly has 117 elected seats. Punjab has historically seen governments led by the Indian National Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and other political formations. The 2022 Punjab Assembly election resulted in the Aam Aadmi Party forming the state government, with Bhagwant Mann sworn in as Chief Minister on 16 March 2022. The present Assembly is the 16th Punjab Vidhan Sabha. The official Assembly portal lists Bhagwant Mann as Chief Minister and Partap Singh Bajwa as Leader of Opposition.
