Akhilesh Yadav’s SP Skips Kharge Lunch: INDIA Bloc Unity Under Spotlight

The internal dynamics of the INDIA bloc have come under renewed scrutiny after the Samajwadi Party skipped a lunch meeting hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for Opposition leaders in Delhi.
The meeting was organised as opposition parties coordinated their strategy around the ongoing campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Several INDIA bloc leaders attended the meeting, but the absence of the Samajwadi Party and its leader Akhilesh Yadav immediately attracted political attention.
The development came a day after SP lawmakers had maintained a separate position during an Opposition mobilisation, adding to speculation about differences within the alliance.
Congress Plays Down Differences
Congress leaders have sought to avoid presenting the SP’s absence as a major rupture.
According to reports, the Congress side indicated that the decision was linked to the short notice for the lunch meeting. The party has continued to maintain that Opposition parties remain united on the broader issue concerning the Election Commission.
The Congress has been trying to bring multiple Opposition parties together for a coordinated campaign against the SIR process and the Election Commission.
However, the SP’s separate positioning highlights the difficulties involved in maintaining a common strategy among parties with different regional interests.
Why the SP Matters
The Samajwadi Party is one of the most important Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc because of its political strength in Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh Yadav has built the SP around its own electoral strategy and has often taken an independent position on issues involving Congress.
While both parties remain part of the broader Opposition grouping, their political interests are not always identical.
Uttar Pradesh is particularly important because of its large number of Lok Sabha seats and its influence over national political calculations.
Separate Positions During Protests
The latest development follows an earlier Opposition mobilisation in Delhi where SP lawmakers reportedly formed a separate group.
Akhilesh Yadav was also among opposition leaders detained during the previous protests but later returned to Lucknow.
The SP’s participation in the broader protest movement therefore remains significant, even though its coordination with Congress appears less seamless than the Congress leadership would prefer.
INDIA Bloc’s Coordination Challenge
The INDIA bloc has always brought together parties with different ideological backgrounds and regional priorities.
Congress wants to present the alliance as a national alternative to the BJP. Regional parties, meanwhile, are primarily focused on protecting their own political space.
This creates a constant challenge in deciding when parties should act collectively and when they should retain an independent political position.
The current Election Commission controversy has provided the Opposition with a common issue, but differences in political strategy remain visible.
What Happens Next
The immediate focus will remain on the continuing protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
If the SP participates actively in future joint actions, the current episode could remain a temporary coordination issue. If separate political positions continue, however, questions about the long-term cohesion of the INDIA bloc may become stronger.
For Congress, maintaining Opposition unity is particularly important as it attempts to build a coordinated national campaign.
For Akhilesh Yadav and the SP, retaining political independence while remaining part of the broader Opposition remains the key balancing act.
