The by-election was necessitated after L. Murugan resigned, voting will be held on November 12 and counting on the same day

Why is there a Bypoll in Madhya Pradesh?
A Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh has fallen vacant. Former Union Minister of State L. Murugan resigned from both the Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha on 13th October 2026. His term was supposed to continue till April 2, 2030, but he stepped down to focus on strengthening the BJP organization in Tamil Nadu. After his resignation, the Election Commission announced a bypoll to fill this vacant seat.
What is the Election Schedule?
The Election Commission of India has announced the full schedule for this by-election. The process started on 26th October 2026.
According to the schedule, the last date for filing nominations is 2nd November. Scrutiny of nominations will be done on 3rd November and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 5th November.
Polling will be held on 12th November 2026 from 9 AM to 4 PM at the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in Bhopal. Counting of votes will start at 5 PM on the same day. The entire election process will be completed before 16th November.
Who is BJP's Candidate?
On 28th October 2026, the BJP Central Election Committee announced its candidate for this bypoll. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has been fielded from Madhya Pradesh.
Puri is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh, but his term is ending on 25th November 2026. To ensure his continuity in Parliament, the party has shifted him to Madhya Pradesh. He is a 74-year-old former diplomat turned politician and is considered a senior and experienced leader in the Modi government.
According to sources, he will file his nomination papers on 31st October at the MP Vidhan Sabha in Bhopal in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and state party leaders.
Will BJP Win Easily?
Yes, the BJP's victory in this bypoll is almost certain. In the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly, the BJP has 164 MLAs. To win this Rajya Sabha bypoll, a candidate needs only 116 votes.
The Congress has only 66 MLAs, so it is not in a position to win. Because of this clear majority, BJP is comfortably placed to send Hardeep Singh Puri to the Rajya Sabha again. The tenure of this seat will be till April 2030, which was the remaining term of L. Murugan.
Why is This Bypoll Important?
This bypoll is politically important for two reasons. First, it will save the cabinet berth of a senior Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. If he had not been elected, he would have to resign from the ministry within six months.
Second, it shows the BJP's strategy for Tamil Nadu. L. Murugan is being sent back to his home state to prepare the party for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026. The BJP wants to increase its footprint in the South, and Murugan is seen as a key face for that mission.
