EC Extends SIR Deadline in 6 States After Supreme Court Question Voters Get Big Relief

What is the Latest Order?
The Election Commission of India on October 29 has extended the timeline for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in six states - Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland and Telangana. The final voter lists for five states will now be published on November 30 and for Delhi on December 22, 2026.
Why Did EC Extend the Deadline?
The extension came just a day after Supreme Court intervention. On October 28, Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned the urgency of the October 30 deadline in Delhi when no election is scheduled. The CJI said EC should not insist on early cut-off and should give more time to voters for re-inclusion. EC agreed and issued new dates the same day.
State-Wise New Deadlines
1. Delhi - Biggest Relief
Claims and objections window: 30 Oct to 25 Nov (26 days extra)
Disposal by officials: Till 15 Dec
Final Roll 22 Dec 2026
2. Maharashtra
Window was closed on 26 Oct, now reopened till 13 Nov
Disposal till 25 Nov
Final Roll 30 Nov
3. Haryana and Andhra Pradesh
Disposal till 20 Nov
Final Roll 30 Nov
4. Nagaland and Telangana
Nagaland disposal till 25 Nov, Telangana till 26 Nov
Final Roll 30 Nov for both
What is SIR?
Special Intensive Revision is the exercise to clean voter lists by removing dead, duplicate and shifted voters and adding new eligible voters. The current exercise is part of 3rd phase covering 19 states/UTs.
What EC Said?
EC has asked all Chief Electoral Officers to publicise the revised schedule widely. The extension also came after requests from state poll panels.
Supreme Court Stand in May
Earlier in May, Supreme Court had upheld SIR but clarified that EC cannot decide citizenship during this process.
