History
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) was established on 5 July 1997 under the leadership of Lalu Prasad Yadav after separating from the Janata Dal. The party developed a major political base in Bihar and has also had a political presence in Jharkhand and other parts of India. From its formation, RJD has identified social justice, secularism, equality and representation of disadvantaged communities as important themes in its political programme. The party became an important political force in Bihar during the late 1990s and 2000s. RJD participated in national politics and was part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) during the period when Lalu Prasad Yadav served as Union Minister for Railways from 2004 to 2009. In Bihar, RJD has participated in different political alliances and governments. In the 2015 Bihar Assembly election, RJD contested as part of the Mahagathbandhan and became the largest party in the Bihar Legislative Assembly at that election. The party has continued to participate in Bihar and national elections, with employment, education, healthcare, social justice, representation and development among issues highlighted in its political programmes
