Bihar Politics: JD(U) Reiterates Position on Uniform Civil Code

The Uniform Civil Code has become a prominent issue in Bihar Politics after leaders of the Janata Dal (United) reiterated the party’s position against implementing a UCC in the state.

The development follows recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code across BJP and NDA-ruled states. In response, JD(U) leaders have said that the party’s position regarding Bihar remains unchanged.

JD(U) leaders have maintained that while the party supported the UCC Bill in Parliament, it does not favour implementing the law in Bihar without wider consultation and consideration of the state’s social and community composition.

The issue has drawn attention because JD(U) is an important ally of the BJP-led NDA at the Centre and also shares power with the BJP in Bihar. The differing positions on the state-level implementation of the UCC have therefore become part of the ongoing political discussion.

BJP leaders in Bihar have expressed support for the broader UCC proposal. According to Hindustan Times, BJP leaders in the state have backed Amit Shah’s position and described the UCC as an issue that should be pursued in BJP-ruled states.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal has also sought clarification from NDA allies over their position on the proposal. This has added another dimension to the debate among Bihar’s major political parties.

The UCC debate is likely to remain part of discussions involving Bihar’s politicians, particularly as different parties (opens in a new tab) explain their positions on legislation concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance and related personal-law matters.

INDIA Bloc Announces Nationwide Protest Plan Over Election Commission Row

For voters and citizens, the debate involves questions about the scope of a common civil framework, the constitutional process required for legislation and the role of state governments. Different parties and leaders have put forward different positions, making the issue an important subject of public discussion.

The latest developments show that the UCC remains a significant point of discussion within Bihar’s political landscape. Further developments will depend on consultations, legislative decisions and the positions taken by the Centre, the state government and political parties.

“The Uniform Civil Code has emerged as a fresh political issue in Bihar after JD(U) leaders reiterated that the party does not support implementing a UCC in the state, while BJP leaders have backed the proposal at the national level.”

The INDIA bloc has announced a nationwide campaign over concerns related to the Election Commission and electoral processes. The Opposition plans protests, a march to the Election Commission headquarters, and a legal challenge to provisions of the Chief Election Commissioner Act, 2023.
