History
Odisha was constituted as a separate province on 1 April 1936, bringing together Odia-speaking areas that had previously been administered as parts of different provinces. The first elections to the Odisha Legislative Assembly were held in January 1937 under the Government of India Act, 1935. The first Assembly had 60 seats, including nominated members. Biswanath Das became the first elected head of government after the initial ministry headed by Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo. After independence, Odisha's legislative institutions continued under the constitutional framework of India. The Odisha Legislative Assembly is a unicameral legislature. Its current strength is 147 elected members. Odisha's political history has included governments led by the Indian National Congress, Swatantra Party, Janata Dal, Biju Janata Dal and, since 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party. Naveen Patnaik served as Chief Minister from 5 March 2000 to 12 June 2024, according to the Odisha government's official former-Chief-Ministers record. Mohan Charan Majhi became Chief Minister on 12 June 2024. The 2024 Odisha Assembly election resulted in a change of government, with the BJP forming the state government and Mohan Charan Majhi becoming Chief Minister.
Achievements
Odisha has developed a significant institutional, economic, infrastructure and social-development base since becoming a separate province. Established Odisha as a separate administrative and political unit on 1 April 1936. Developed a continuous state legislative institution with a long history dating back to the first Assembly of 1937. Developed Bhubaneswar as the state's administrative and political capital. Expanded road, rail, port, power and other infrastructure networks. Developed major industrial and mineral-based economic sectors. Expanded public education, healthcare and social-welfare programmes. Developed disaster-management systems and institutional capacity for responding to cyclones, floods and other natural disasters. Strengthened agriculture, rural development and irrigation programmes. Expanded tourism and promoted Odisha's cultural heritage, including its temples, festivals, handicrafts and traditional arts. Maintained a significant presence in national sports, particularly through investment in sports infrastructure and development programmes.
