Assam Flood Disaster Takes Political Turn! Himanta Government Seeks CBI Probe as Accountability Questions Intensify

Assam's flood crisis has taken a significant political turn after the state government decided to seek a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the devastating floods that struck parts of Upper Assam earlier in 2026.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision following a Cabinet meeting on November 3. The proposed investigation will focus on identifying the exact causes behind the destruction in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
According to the Chief Minister, the state government intends to send a formal request to the Centre within ten days. However, the final decision on whether the CBI will take up the investigation rests with the Centre and the investigating agency.
Dikhow River Flooding and Allegations of Illegal Mining
The Dikhow River played a major role in the flooding that devastated parts of eastern Assam, including Sivasagar, Charaideo and neighbouring areas.
The disaster caused extensive damage to homes, roads, schools, embankments, agricultural activities and other essential infrastructure.
At least 108 flood-related deaths were reported across Assam during the year, according to the latest reporting on the Cabinet announcement.
One of the major controversies surrounding the disaster involves allegations of illegal mining in the river on the Nagaland side.
Opposition voices have raised concerns that mining activities may have contributed to changes in the river system and worsened flooding. However, these allegations have not yet been established as the cause of the disaster.
Opposition Demands Accountability
The flood disaster has also triggered political pressure on the Himanta Biswa Sarma government.
Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi had raised concerns about the scale of destruction, compensation and the government's assessment of affected households.
The controversy has centred on whether relief and rehabilitation measures adequately addressed the needs of families who lost homes, agricultural resources and livelihoods.
For opposition parties, the proposed investigation represents an opportunity to demand answers about the circumstances that led to the disaster.
What Does the CBI Investigation Mean?
A CBI investigation, if accepted, could examine several important questions:
Whether illegal mining or other human activities contributed to the flooding.
Whether there were failures in river management and infrastructure protection.
Whether relevant authorities followed environmental and safety regulations.
Whether any administrative negligence contributed to the scale of destruction.
What Happens Next?
The next major development will be the Assam government's formal communication to the Centre.
Whether the CBI accepts the proposed investigation will determine how the controversy develops. Meanwhile, residents of the affected districts will expect the government to continue relief and rehabilitation efforts.
