Sriramulu Stages Sudden Protest in Ballari Over Rising Road Accidents; Traffic Comes to a Standstill

The protest brought attention to the need for immediate measures to prevent road accidents and ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
Why Did Sriramulu Stage the Protest?
The immediate trigger for the protest was a series of road accidents involving heavy vehicles in Ballari city.
According to local reports, three accidents occurred within a short period, resulting in the deaths of young people. The deaths of two youngsters in separate lorry accidents within just three days reportedly intensified public anger.
- 35 road accidents were reported in Ballari city over the previous three months.
- Four people lost their lives during this period.
- Two young men, identified as Abu (23) and Imran (28), reportedly died in separate lorry accidents within three days.
These incidents have raised serious questions about heavy-vehicle movement through busy residential and commercial areas.
Sriramulu Demands Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles
During the protest near the Bandimot area, former minister Sriramulu, accompanied by his supporters, demanded strict action to control lorry movement inside Ballari city.
His major demands included:
1. Heavy vehicles should not be allowed to enter the city during daytime.
2. Lorry operators should use designated alternative roads outside the city.
3. If entry into the city is unavoidable, heavy vehicles should be permitted only after 10 PM.
4. Families of those who lost their lives in accidents should receive higher compensation.
5. Police should take strict action against lorries violating traffic restrictions.
Sriramulu also questioned the implementation of existing restrictions on heavy vehicles and called for better traffic management.
Road Blockage Causes Traffic Disruption
The protest at Bandimot also affected normal traffic movement in the area. As protesters gathered and blocked the road, commuters faced difficulties, with vehicles experiencing delays and traffic movement being disrupted.
The road blockade brought attention to another important issue: while protests are organised to demand public safety, road users, office-goers and other commuters also face difficulties when major roads are blocked.
Police Respond to the Protest
APMC Police Station officials reportedly reached the protest location and interacted with Sriramulu and other protesters.
During the discussion, police assured the protesters that heavy vehicles would not be allowed to enter the city during daytime. The assurance came after demands for stricter enforcement of traffic restrictions.
The protest also saw the participation of former Ballari MLA Somashekara Reddy, BJP corporators and several party workers.
A Bigger Question for Ballari's Road Safety
The latest incidents have once again highlighted the challenges of managing heavy-vehicle traffic in Ballari, a city where mining-related transportation and regular urban traffic share important roads.
Residents are concerned about the safety of two-wheeler riders, pedestrians and schoolchildren. Preventing accidents requires more than temporary restrictions. Proper alternative routes, designated lorry parking areas, CCTV monitoring and consistent enforcement of traffic rules are equally important.
The district administration and police department now face the challenge of ensuring that the assurances given during the protest translate into effective action.
Conclusion
Sriramulu's sudden protest in Ballari has brought the issue of road accidents and heavy-vehicle movement back into public discussion. With several accidents reported in recent months and families losing loved ones, residents are demanding stronger road safety measures.
The key question now is whether the district administration will implement strict restrictions on daytime lorry movement and provide safer roads for Ballari residents.
