Karnataka KSRTC Bus Fare Hike Sparks Opposition Outrage: BJP Announces Statewide Protests Against Congress Government

The decision has attracted criticism from the BJP and JD(S), which have announced protests against the government's move. Meanwhile, the state government has defended the revision, citing rising diesel prices, employee salary expenses and the growing financial losses of transport corporations.
KSRTC Bus Fares Increased by 23 Per Cent
Karnataka Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh announced the revised fare structure on November 4. According to the government, fares across the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) have been increased.
Why Did the Karnataka Government Increase Bus Fares?
The state government has explained that the fare revision became necessary because of increasing operational expenses.
According to Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh, the four transport corporations are facing significant financial difficulties due to several factors:
- Increasing diesel and fuel prices.
- Higher employee salaries and dearness allowance.
- Rising spare parts and vehicle maintenance expenses.
- Pending financial liabilities and accumulated losses.
The government has stated that the four corporations have accumulated losses of approximately Rs 10,200 crore.
The government believes that increasing ticket prices will help reduce these financial pressures and maintain the operations of public transport services.
BJP Announces Statewide Protest Against Fare Hike
The BJP has strongly opposed the Karnataka bus fare hike and announced statewide protests on November 5.
Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka criticised the Congress government, arguing that ordinary people are being forced to pay for the financial difficulties of state-run transport corporations.
Ashoka alleged that the government has failed to release approximately Rs 5,650 crore in outstanding payments to the transport corporations. According to his statement, the outstanding amount includes dues to KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC.
He argued that the government could have avoided increasing passenger fares if it had cleared the pending payments.
The BJP has planned demonstrations across district headquarters, including Bengaluru, demanding that the government reconsider its decision.
JD(S) Also Opposes the Decision
The Janata Dal (Secular) has also expressed opposition to the increased bus fares.
The opposition's criticism comes at a time when households are already facing higher expenses due to increases in the prices of milk and milk products.
The opposition parties argue that the combined impact of rising essential commodity prices and public transport fares will increase the financial burden on ordinary families.
DK Shivakumar Defends the Government's Decision
Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar has defended the fare revision, stating that the transport corporations are facing serious financial difficulties.
He explained that rising diesel prices have increased operational costs and that the government has had to provide financial assistance to ensure that buses continue operating.
Shivakumar also stated that the government would consider reducing bus fares if the Union Government reduced taxes and cess on petrol and diesel.
The government has clarified that the Shakti scheme, which provides free bus travel to eligible women, is not the sole reason behind the fare increase. It maintains that reimbursements are made for free tickets issued under the scheme, although some payments remain pending.
How Will the Fare Hike Affect Ordinary Passengers?
The fare revision is expected to affect different categories of passengers across Karnataka.
Daily office commuters, college students, workers and people travelling between villages and towns may face higher monthly transportation expenses.
For families depending on government buses for regular travel, even a small increase in ticket prices can make a noticeable difference over time.
The issue is particularly significant in rural areas, where government buses remain an important mode of transportation for accessing education, employment, healthcare and other essential services.
Conclusion: Political Battle Over Karnataka Bus Fare Hike Intensifies
The KSRTC and BMTC fare hike has now developed into a major political issue in Karnataka. While the Congress government argues that the revision is necessary to protect the financial stability of transport corporations, the BJP and JD(S) claim that the additional burden is being transferred to ordinary passengers.
With statewide protests announced by the opposition, the coming days could see further political debate over public transport costs, government financial management and the affordability of essential services.
The key question for Karnataka commuters is whether the government will reconsider the increased fares or continue with the revised ticket prices despite growing opposition.
