History
Formation and Foundation (2013) The National People's Party was officially launched on 6 January 2013 by veteran parliamentarian and former Lok Sabha Speaker P. A. Sangma in New Delhi, following his exit from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Sangma established the party to give a unified, powerful political voice to the tribal and indigenous populations of Northeast India at the national level.
Early Milestones and Transition (2014–2016) In the 2014 General Election, founder P. A. Sangma secured a major victory by winning the Tura Lok Sabha constituency in Meghalaya. Following his demise in March 2016, his son Conrad K. Sangma assumed the party's leadership, successfully winning the Tura parliamentary by-election and initiating a strategic regional expansion across neighboring states.
Rise to Power in Meghalaya (2018) In the 2018 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election, the NPP emerged as the primary political force, winning 19 seats. It formed the government under the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition, with Conrad Sangma being sworn in as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
Historic National Party Recognition (2019) On 7 June 2019, the Election Commission of India (ECI) formally granted the NPP the status of a National Political Party after it fulfilled the recognition criteria across four northeastern states—Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. With this milestone, the NPP became the first-ever political party from Northeast India to achieve official National Party status.
Consolidation and Re-election (2023–Present) In the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections, the NPP consolidated its dominance by emerging as the single-largest party with 26 seats, successfully retaining power for a second consecutive term under Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. The party also maintained active legislative representation in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland while serving as a prominent member of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
