Imphal, September 21, 2026: Political activity in Manipur is gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, with several regional parties coming together to strengthen coordination and develop a common political platform. The newly formed Manipur Regional Political Parties Coordinating Committee (MRPPCC) held a joint meeting on September 20 to discuss cooperation among regional political groups and key issues affecting the state.
The MRPPCC currently includes the People Democratic Alliance (PDA), People's Political Party (PPP), Manipur Democratic People's Front (MDPF) and Good Governance Party (GGP). The committee was formed on September 13 with the stated objective of facilitating consultation, coordination and cooperation among regional political parties ahead of the upcoming Assembly election.
Regional Parties Seek Stronger Political Platform
MRPPCC chairman Khaidem Mani said there is a need for a strong regional political party that understands Manipur's specific issues and places the interests of the people at the centre of its political programme. The committee has indicated that it could work towards greater coordination among regional parties as the election approaches.
Maharashtra's decision to declare 265 talukas drought-affected has triggered questions from both ruling alliance leaders and the Opposition. While some areas represented by Mahayuti leaders have been excluded, the MVA has questioned the transparency of the assessment process.
The development adds another dimension to Manipur's pre-election politics, where national parties and regional political groups are preparing their strategies. The BJP, Congress, National People's Party and other parties are already active in the state, while smaller regional groups are seeking greater political space.
NRC Issue Becomes Important Election Topic
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) has also emerged as a significant political issue ahead of the election. Recent protests and political discussions have focused on demands for updating the NRC before the Census, with some groups seeking 1951 as the base year. The issue was also discussed at an all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Y. Khemchand earlier this month.
The all-party meeting included representatives from several political parties and civil society organisations. According to The Sangai Express, participants discussed pressing the government to issue a gazette notification for updating the NRC and adopting 1951 as the base year.
The NRC debate comes as the Election Commission has completed the Special Intensive Revision of Manipur's electoral rolls. The final roll published in September contains more than 19.60 lakh electors across the state's 60 Assembly constituencies.
Election Preparations Gain Momentum
The formation of the regional coordination committee comes at a time when political parties are beginning to intensify their preparations for the 2027 election. The regional groups have discussed issues including territorial integrity, rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced persons, highways and other state-specific concerns.
Political Parties (opens in a new tab) are expected to increase their public outreach, meetings and Rallies (opens in a new tab) as the election draws closer. Questions surrounding governance, peace, rehabilitation, voter rolls, indigenous identity and the NRC are likely to remain part of the wider election debate.
The 2027 Manipur Assembly election (opens in a new tab) will be closely watched because political parties will be campaigning against the backdrop of the state's continuing challenges. The evolving alliance discussions among regional parties could add another layer to the electoral contest, although the final structure of alliances and candidates will emerge closer to the election.
Manipur's Political Landscape
The latest developments show that regional political forces are attempting to build a coordinated platform while larger parties continue their own election preparations. The MRPPCC's efforts and the continuing NRC debate are likely to remain important parts of Manipur's political discussion in the months ahead.
As the election approaches, voters will have the opportunity to compare the programmes, candidates and positions presented by the different political formations. Further developments on regional cooperation, NRC-related decisions and rehabilitation policies could shape the issues discussed during the campaign.

The INDIA bloc has announced a nationwide campaign over concerns related to the Election Commission and electoral processes. The Opposition plans protests, a march to the Election Commission headquarters, and a legal challenge to provisions of the Chief Election Commissioner Act, 2023.
Discussions between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have intensified, with reports suggesting alliance talks and possible Cabinet representation. However, no official announcement has been made by either party.
With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election approaching in 2027, the Samajwadi Party and Congress are working to strengthen their alliance after their improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political observers believe the opposition has an important opportunity, but unity and effective seat-sharing will be crucial.
