YS Jagan Raises Questions Over Pulivendula Municipal Elections: Demands Fair Polling and Accountability

The local body elections have become a major political issue between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led alliance and the opposition YSRCP. Allegations of nomination irregularities, police interference, intimidation of candidates and concerns over polling arrangements have added to the political tension.
Jagan has questioned the election process and demanded accountability from officials, while maintaining that voters and opposition candidates must be allowed to exercise their democratic rights freely.
Jagan's Allegations Over Election Irregularities
Addressing YSRCP leaders and party workers in Pulivendula on October 27, Jagan accused Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's government of misusing official machinery during the local body election process.
He alleged that opposition candidates were prevented from filing nominations in several wards through intimidation and administrative pressure.
According to Jagan, Pulivendula Municipality has 40 wards, but YSRCP candidates could file nominations in only 20 wards. He also questioned the circumstances under which several ZPTC seats went uncontested.
He described the situation as nomination-related electoral irregularities and questioned how elections could be considered competitive when opposition candidates were allegedly prevented from entering the contest.
Questions Over Police Action and Officials
Jagan also criticised the police department and election authorities over their handling of nomination-related incidents.
He alleged that YSRCP workers faced lathi charges, police firing and criminal cases while attempting to support candidates during the nomination process.
He further claimed that 924 party workers in Pulivendula faced attempt-to-murder cases.
Jagan appealed to police officials to follow the Constitution and perform their duties without political interference. He also warned that officials found responsible for unlawful actions would face accountability under the law.
These allegations have not been independently established and remain part of the political dispute surrounding the elections.
Helicopter Landing Controversy During Jagan's Pulivendula Visit
Another controversy emerged on November 1, when Jagan travelled from Bengaluru to Pulivendula to participate in the municipal elections.
According to reports, his helicopter faced difficulties obtaining landing permission at the expected time. The helicopter reportedly remained airborne for some time before making an emergency landing in Pulivendula.
YSRCP leaders alleged that last-minute changes to landing permissions created unnecessary obstacles to Jagan's visit. Reports also said that authorities had indicated landing would be permitted only after 2:30 PM.
The incident added another dimension to the ongoing political confrontation between the opposition party and the ruling alliance.
Why Pulivendula Elections Have Become Politically Significant
Pulivendula is closely associated with the political history of the Y.S. family and has been an important political base for YSRCP.
The 2026 municipal elections have therefore attracted attention beyond the municipality itself.
The TDP-led alliance secured uncontested victories in 20 of the municipality's 40 wards, while polling was scheduled in the remaining contested wards.
The YSRCP has questioned these uncontested victories, alleging that its candidates were denied an opportunity to contest. The ruling alliance and opposition have offered competing accounts of the nomination process.
The outcome of the remaining contested wards will be an important part of the municipal election results.
Will Jagan Demand Re-polling in Pulivendula?
The central question surrounding the election controversy is whether the opposition will seek re-polling in any affected polling stations.
If the YSRCP identifies specific instances of bogus voting, booth interference, intimidation or other violations, it can submit complaints and supporting evidence to the appropriate election authorities.
However, a demand for re-polling and an official decision to conduct it are two different matters. Any such decision must follow the applicable election rules and the competent authority's examination of the evidence.
As of the latest reports available, a specific formal decision ordering re-polling across Pulivendula has not been confirmed.
Conclusion
The Pulivendula municipal elections have developed into an important political and administrative controversy in Andhra Pradesh.
Jagan's allegations concerning nomination procedures, police action and polling arrangements have brought attention to the importance of transparent election management.
The Election Commission now faces the responsibility of examining genuine complaints, protecting voters and ensuring that the election process follows established rules.
Ultimately, the credibility of local elections depends on whether every eligible voter can cast a vote freely and every candidate receives a fair opportunity to participate.
