UP MLC Election Results 2026: BJP Wins 6 Seats, Samajwadi Party Secures 5; SP Wins Varanasi and Lucknow

The results of the 2026 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections have produced a closely contested outcome, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning six of the 11 seats and the Samajwadi Party (SP) securing five. The results were declared on October 29 after a prolonged counting process that continued for more than two days in some constituencies.
The elections were held for five Graduates’ constituencies and six Teachers’ constituencies. The contest attracted attention because it took place months before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and involved several constituencies considered politically significant for both parties.
SP Wins Key Seats in Varanasi and Lucknow
One of the most closely watched contests was the Varanasi Graduates’ constituency, where sitting SP MLC Ashutosh Sinha defeated BJP candidate Kedarnath Singh. Sinha secured 55,046 votes against Singh’s 35,114, winning by a margin of 19,932 votes.
The counting process in Varanasi continued for an extended period, with allegations of irregularities and demands for a recount raised during the process. The result was eventually declared in favour of Sinha, allowing the SP to retain the seat.
The SP also registered an important victory in the Lucknow Graduates’ constituency. Party candidate Kanti Singh defeated BJP nominee Avneesh Kumar Singh by 14,855 votes, securing 51,168 votes against 36,313.
BJP Retains Six Seats
The BJP won six constituencies, including four Teachers’ seats and two Graduates’ seats. Its victories included the Agra Graduates’, Meerut Graduates’, Meerut Teachers’, Lucknow Teachers’, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’ and Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituencies.
The SP won three Graduates’ seats—Allahabad-Jhansi, Varanasi and Lucknow—and two Teachers’ seats—Varanasi and Agra-Aligarh.
The outcome also changed the representation of the two seats previously held by an Independent and a Teachers’ Party representative, with the SP winning the Agra Teachers’ seat.
Akhilesh Yadav Congratulates Winners
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav congratulated the party's winning candidates and urged them to avoid victory processions. He asked party leaders and workers to communicate the results peacefully through social media rather than organising celebrations that could cause public inconvenience or tension.
Akhilesh also presented the results as an encouraging development for the SP ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. He described the outcome as a setback for the BJP, while the BJP retained the largest share of the 11 seats.
What the Results Mean Ahead of the 2027 Assembly Elections
The 6–5 result gives the SP five seats from the 11 constituencies that went to polls, compared with the three it had won in the 2020 elections. The BJP, meanwhile, retained six seats, matching its previous total from these constituencies.
The SP's victories in Varanasi and Lucknow Graduates’ constituencies, along with its performance in Allahabad-Jhansi and the Teachers’ seats, will be closely examined by political parties as they prepare for the next Assembly election.
However, the MLC results represent a contest among specific graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies and should not be treated as a direct prediction of the wider Assembly election outcome.
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, both the BJP and the SP are likely to study the constituency-level results, voter participation and local political factors as they plan their next electoral strategies.
