Northeast Politics and Security: Amit Shah Announces Operation Trident After 38 Simultaneous Raids Across Assam, Mizoram and Manipur

The Operation
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), central agencies and state police conducted simultaneous raids on October 23. The Ministry of Home Affairs detailed the operation in a PIB announcement on October 25.
Authorities said the alleged network operated across the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh region, with investigators examining drug routes and financial channels.
Key Figures
According to the PIB:
38 teams targeted 38 locations.
18 people were arrested.
1,424 bank accounts were frozen.
Properties worth ₹17.82 crore were attached.
Around ₹100 crore in hawala transactions was identified.
500 detonators and ₹12 lakh in cash were seized.
These are figures reported by the authorities. Arrests and seizures are not convictions; the responsibility of accused individuals will be determined through legal proceedings.
Why Assam, Mizoram and Manipur?
The PIB identified locations including Aizawl, Champhai and Zokhawthar in Mizoram, Churachandpur in Manipur and the Cachar transit corridor in Assam. Authorities said the investigation traced routes linked to Myanmar, India and Bangladesh. The region’s borders and transport links make inter-agency coordination essential.
Amit Shah’s Statement
Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the operation and described it as part of the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking. He linked it to the Vision Document on Narcotics Control for 2026–2029, which sets a stated goal of eliminating drug networks by December 31, 2029.
Political Importance for the Northeast
Drug trafficking is a major public concern because it affects families, young people and the wider social environment.
The issue also has political implications.
The Union government is responsible for national-level coordination and the functioning of central enforcement agencies, while state governments and police forces have important responsibilities in maintaining law and order and supporting investigations.
When a large operation involves several states, coordination becomes an important measure of administrative effectiveness.
The BJP-led Union government can present the operation as evidence of its security and anti-narcotics policy.
What Happens Next?
Authorities are expected to examine financial records, trace cross-border links and pursue evidence-based prosecutions. Long-term progress also requires awareness, treatment, rehabilitation and community participation.
Conclusion
Operation Trident is a major multi-state enforcement action against an alleged trafficking network in Northeast India. The reported arrests, frozen accounts and attached properties indicate the investigation’s scale. Its success will depend on prosecutions, preventing the network’s return, rehabilitation and regional coordination.
