Chalo Delhi Rahul Gandhi's Call for Massive Protest at Ramlila Maidan on November 1

A major political showdown is set to take place in the national capital. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has given a call for 'Chalo Delhi' march on November 1 at Ramlila Maidan. This protest is being organized against alleged irregularities in the voter list and the functioning of the Election Commission.
For the last two days, Rahul Gandhi has been actively campaigning for this march on social media. He released a video message on X appealing to students and common citizens across the country.
In his video, Gandhi said, "This is not a march of any one political party, this is a march for the soul of India. This is Chalo Delhi Ramlila March, a march to save democracy, to stop vote chori, to save the Constitution.
He made a special appeal to student groups. He said, "I urge all student groups, regardless of your political affiliation – if you feel that India is under attack, if you feel you are under attack, your expression, your ideas, your way of thinking is under attack, come and join us."
One line from his video is going viral very fast. He tried to assure protesters about police action and said, "Don't worry about the police, don't worry about lathis – the BJP will not have the guts to try any of their antics. Come march with us – we will walk together to protect the Constitution, to protect the Indian nation."
What is the controversy?
The entire protest revolves around SIR - Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has started this drive across the country to clean up voter lists by removing duplicate, dead and shifted voters and adding new eligible voters.
However, the Congress-led INDIA bloc has alleged large-scale irregularities in this process. Their claim is that names of genuine voters, especially from weaker sections and minority communities, are being deleted arbitrarily. The opposition is calling it 'Vote Chori' and holding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar responsible for it.
The opposition is demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Earlier, they tried to bring an impeachment motion against him in Parliament but could not get enough support. After that, Congress organized a mock proceeding at the residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge to symbolically highlight their demand. Now the Ramlila Maidan rally is being seen as the next big step in this campaign.
Rahul Gandhi has said that this march will be a united demonstration by all those who are "harassed by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar". He said it will not be just a Congress protest but a joint movement of all opposition parties and citizens.
Preparations from both sides
The Congress party is leaving no stone unturned to make this rally a success. Senior leaders like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal and state in-charges are holding meetings with state units to mobilize workers. Banners featuring Rahul Gandhi have already been put up outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi. According to sources, the party has set a target of bringing at least 10 lakh people to Delhi.
On the administrative side, Delhi Police is also fully prepared. Since Jantar Mantar has been delisted as a protest site, Ramlila Maidan is now one of the three notified public protest sites in the capital. Police have given permission for the rally from 10 am to 5 pm on November 1. Around 3,000 security personnel will be deployed, and traffic diversions will be in place around the area. The police have said that the protest must remain peaceful.
Why November 1 is important
November 1 is also Haryana Foundation Day. On the same day, BJP has also planned several programs and padyatras in Haryana. BJP President Nitin Nabin, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, and other leaders will be in Haryana for different events. Therefore, security arrangements on the Delhi-Haryana border are expected to be tight.
Political experts believe that this rally will intensify the opposition's campaign against the Election Commission ahead of upcoming state elections. Whether this protest remains a peaceful demonstration or takes a political turn, will be clear only on November 1.
People who are planning to attend are advised to reach early due to expected heavy crowd and traffic restrictions around Ramlila Maidan.
