Tamil Nadu Extends Helping Hand to Andhra Pradesh: Sends Electricity Teams and Equipment to Restore Power After Cyclone Arnab

The assistance comes after Cyclone Arnab caused extensive damage to electricity infrastructure across several districts of Andhra Pradesh, leaving numerous villages and residential areas without power. With thousands of electricity poles, transformers and power lines damaged by strong winds and heavy rainfall, the state government has sought support from neighbouring states to accelerate restoration work.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar have been coordinating with neighbouring governments to mobilise additional technical manpower and equipment. Tamil Nadu has responded positively to the request, while Telangana has also agreed to deploy hundreds of electricity personnel.
How Did Tamil Nadu Come Forward to Help Andhra Pradesh?
Following the cyclone, Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar contacted his Tamil Nadu counterpart and explained the extensive damage to the state's electricity distribution network.
He requested the Tamil Nadu government to provide additional technical personnel, repair teams and essential materials to speed up electricity restoration.
According to the minister, Tamil Nadu responded positively and agreed to send electricity department teams along with the necessary equipment.
The assistance is expected to strengthen the ongoing restoration operations, particularly in areas where local electricity workers are facing difficulties because of the scale of infrastructure damage.
The deployment is being coordinated between the electricity departments of the two states to identify manpower requirements, available equipment and locations where additional support is needed.
Why Did Andhra Pradesh Need Assistance From Neighbouring States?
Cyclone Arnab caused considerable damage to Andhra Pradesh's electricity network after bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall.
According to preliminary estimates shared by Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, nearly 15,000 electricity infrastructure assets, including poles, conductors and distribution transformers, were damaged.
The damage affected electricity distribution across several districts, including:
- Konaseema
- East Godavari
- West Godavari
- Kakinada
- Visakhapatnam
- Srikakulam
- Vizianagaram
- Eluru
Fallen trees damaged overhead power lines, while uprooted electricity poles and damaged transformers created additional challenges for restoration teams.
The scale of the destruction meant that the available state electricity department workforce needed additional support to complete repairs quickly.
The preliminary estimated damage to the electricity infrastructure was approximately ₹500 crore, according to the Energy Minister.
Tamil Nadu and Telangana Join Restoration Efforts
Tamil Nadu is not the only neighboring state extending assistance to Andhra Pradesh.
The Telangana government has also agreed to provide technical support and additional electricity department personnel.
Telangana initially agreed to deploy around 500–600 personnel. Separately, reports indicated that 78 teams consisting of 640 personnel from Telangana's Northern Power Distribution Company Limited were deployed to assist restoration operations in Andhra Pradesh.
These teams are helping replace damaged electricity poles, reconnect broken conductors and repair distribution infrastructure.
The cooperation between Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh highlights the importance of coordination between states when a natural disaster affects essential public services.
Which Areas Are Facing the Biggest Electricity Restoration Challenges?
The Konaseema and West Godavari regions have emerged as some of the most affected areas in terms of electricity restoration.
According to officials, thousands of villages experienced power interruptions following the cyclone.
In an update reported on October 30, electricity supply had been restored in 4,881 of the 5,404 affected villages under the APEPDCL jurisdiction.
Chandrababu Naidu Directs Officials to Speed Up Restoration
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed electricity officials and district administrations to accelerate restoration work and ensure that affected families do not face prolonged difficulties.
During review meetings with district collectors and senior officials, he stressed the importance of restoring electricity, clearing fallen trees, removing road obstructions and speeding up relief distribution.
The Chief Minister also approached neighboring states seeking additional manpower and technical equipment.
Conclusion: Neighboring States Stand Together During a Crisis
Tamil Nadu's decision to provide electricity restoration teams and essential materials to Andhra Pradesh marks an important example of cooperation between neighboring states during a natural disaster.
With Telangana also contributing technical personnel, Andhra Pradesh has received additional support to address the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Arnab.
