Telangana SIR Row: 28,870 Form 7 Applications Filed

Telangana SIR Row: Over 28,870 Form 7 Applications Filed
More than 28,870 Form 7 applications have been submitted during Telangana's ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, prompting election officials to warn applicants against knowingly providing false information.
The development comes amid a wider national political debate over electoral-roll revision and the use of Form 7, which is used to object to the inclusion of a name or seek deletion of an existing electoral-roll entry.
Hyderabad Records Thousands of Applications
Data from the ongoing exercise shows significant variation across Telangana districts.
Hyderabad accounts for around 5,400 Form 7 applications, the highest among the districts mentioned in the latest data.
Other districts with substantial numbers include Jayashankar Bhupalpally with 3,145, Sangareddy with 3,095 and Siddipet with 2,633 applications.
Nizamabad, Nirmal, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri have also recorded applications in the ongoing process.
What Is Form 7?
Form 7 is used by voters to object to the proposed inclusion of a person's name in the electoral roll or request deletion of an existing entry.
During the SIR exercise, large numbers of such applications can require verification before election authorities take action.
The Election Commission has indicated that bulk applications, including those submitted through political parties, will be subjected to inquiry and verification.
Officials Warn Against False Information
Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C Sudharshan Reddy has directed Electoral Registration Officers to take action against applicants who knowingly submit false statements or declarations in electoral-roll applications.
The warning is significant because incorrect or deliberately false applications can affect the accuracy of electoral rolls.
Election authorities therefore have to balance the right of citizens to raise objections with the requirement that electoral-roll changes be supported by valid information.
SIR Has Become a Political Issue
The Special Intensive Revision process has become politically sensitive in several states.
Opposition parties have raised concerns about possible deletion of eligible voters, while election authorities have maintained that the revision process is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls.
The Telangana figures add another state-level dimension to the broader national discussion.
Political parties are likely to continue monitoring the Form 7 process closely, particularly in constituencies where large numbers of applications are submitted.
Verification Remains Important
The filing of a Form 7 application does not by itself mean that a voter's name has been removed.
Applications must go through the prescribed verification process before any change is made to the electoral roll.
This distinction is important when discussing the current numbers because 28,870 applications do not represent 28,870 confirmed deletions.
The election authorities' verification process will determine which applications are valid.
Electoral Roll Revision Ahead
The Telangana exercise comes at a time when electoral-roll revisions have become a major political issue nationally.
The large number of Form 7 applications means that the verification process will remain under scrutiny from political parties, election officials and voters.
For now, the key development is the scale of applications and the Election Commission's warning against false declarations.
Further action will depend on the findings of the verification process.
