Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Booked Over Alleged Forcible Entry Into Akashvani Bhavan

Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several others following an INDIA bloc protest at Akashvani Bhavan in New Delhi.
The case relates to the protest on October 6, 2026, when INDIA bloc leaders and MPs attempted to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission of India office. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over their concerns regarding the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to Delhi Police, protesters breached barricades and continued towards the Election Commission despite directions to disperse. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra subsequently entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises along with other protesters. Police have described the entry as being without permission, leading to the registration of the FIR.
The incident followed a prolonged protest that lasted for several hours inside the Akashvani Bhavan premises. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other opposition leaders were later detained by Delhi Police and subsequently released.
INDIA Bloc Protest Over Chief Election Commissioner
The protest was organised by opposition parties under the INDIA bloc amid a continuing political dispute over the Election Commission's electoral-roll revision exercise.
The opposition has raised allegations concerning the SIR process and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest was part of a broader campaign by opposition parties seeking answers and raising concerns about the electoral-roll revision process.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has maintained its position on the process and indicated that political parties can approach it through established procedures for meetings and discussions.
Around 260 People Detained
The FIR came a day after Delhi Police detained around 260 people during the INDIA bloc protest, including 10 MPs, according to the report. The march was stopped near the Election Commission office after protesters encountered police barricades.
The confrontation resulted in a prolonged standoff between opposition leaders and police. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were among those detained after the protest at Akashvani Bhavan.
Political Tensions Escalate
The FIR adds another legal dimension to the ongoing confrontation between opposition parties and authorities over the Election Commission's electoral-roll revision exercise.
For the Congress and its INDIA bloc partners, the protest has become an important platform to raise concerns about the electoral process. For Delhi Police, the case concerns alleged unauthorised entry and actions during the protest.
The FIR is subject to investigation, and the allegations against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the other named individuals have not been established by a court.
Expert View
The FIR highlights the growing confrontation between the INDIA bloc and authorities over the Election Commission's SIR exercise. The political dispute now has both an electoral-process dimension and a legal dimension, with the police investigation expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged entry into Akashvani Bhavan.
