The BJP is preparing for an intensive political campaign in Punjab with the launch of four Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras from September 18. According to reports, the yatras are planned to travel nearly 4,000 kilometres across the state and cover all 117 Assembly constituencies.
The campaign is being positioned around the issue of drug abuse, which remains one of the major political and social concerns in Punjab. The BJP is expected to use the statewide outreach to interact with residents and highlight its proposed approach toward tackling the drug problem.
BJP Targets AAP Government
The announcement comes as political parties increasingly turn their attention toward the 2027 Punjab Assembly election. The BJP has accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to adequately address the drug menace and has linked the issue with broader concerns over governance and law and order.
Dhruv Rathee and Prakash Raj are participating in a People's Tribunal organised in Bengaluru over concerns raised by protesters about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, followed by a symbolic chappal protest.
The Odisha government has formed a commission headed by retired High Court judge Pramath Patnaik to study SEBC representation in local self-government institutions.
The campaign therefore has both a public-awareness component and a clear political dimension. Through its Politics campaign, the BJP will seek to strengthen its presence at the grassroots level and present itself as an alternative to the ruling AAP.
Punjab remains an important political battleground, with AAP, Congress, BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal expected to compete for influence in the next Assembly election.
Four Yatras to Cover All 117 Constituencies
The BJP's campaign is expected to involve four separate yatras covering different parts of Punjab. Reports indicate that the programme will begin from the Pathankot area and conclude in Jalandhar on September 30.
The concluding public meeting is expected to be addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, giving the campaign additional national-level visibility. BJP national president Nitin Nabin is also expected to play a role in launching the campaign.
The statewide route will allow BJP leaders and workers to connect with voters across urban and rural constituencies. Such Rallies (opens in a new tab) and public outreach programmes are likely to become increasingly important as parties begin building their campaign networks for 2027.
Drug Issue Could Become Major Election Theme
The drug menace has the potential to become one of the central issues in Punjab's political debate before the next Assembly election. The BJP is seeking to make the issue a major part of its campaign narrative by directly connecting drug-related concerns with governance and public safety.
For the AAP government, the campaign presents another political challenge. The ruling party will likely have to respond to the BJP's allegations while highlighting its own measures and policies related to drug prevention, rehabilitation and law enforcement.
Opposition parties have also been active in criticizing the government on different governance issues. This competitive environment could make drug policy and law and order important subjects during the coming election campaign.
Although the 2027 Assembly election is still ahead, political activity in Punjab is already intensifying. The BJP's decision to organize a campaign across every Assembly constituency demonstrates its intention to build a stronger statewide organization.
The upcoming yatras could also provide the party with an opportunity to assess local issues and voter sentiment before the formal election campaign begins.
For Punjab's Political Parties (opens in a new tab), the next several months are likely to involve increased grassroots mobilization, public meetings and competing narratives over governance and development.
The BJP's Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras therefore represent more than a single campaign initiative. They are also part of the party's broader effort to establish itself as a serious contender in Punjab's 2027 political contest.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced four Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras beginning September 18, 2026, with plans to cover all 117 Assembly constituencies. The campaign will focus on the drug menace while also highlighting corruption, law and order and governance issues ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.”
