India-US Trade Talks Hit Plateau, Says Nirmala Sitharaman

India-US Trade Talks Hit Plateau as Nirmala Sitharaman Says Further Concessions Are Difficult
India-US negotiations over a proposed trade agreement have reached a difficult stage, with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman saying that the talks may have reached a plateau and that further concessions could be difficult.
The comments come as New Delhi and Washington continue discussions over tariffs, market access and the broader trade relationship between the two countries.
Negotiations Face Difficult Issues
India and the United States have been negotiating a trade pact aimed at expanding economic ties and addressing market-access concerns.
However, the talks have encountered differences over several issues.
Sitharaman said there is some possibility of progress but indicated that the room for additional concessions is limited.
The comments suggest that both sides are still engaged but have not yet reached agreement on the most difficult areas.
Tariffs Remain a Major Issue
Tariffs have become an important part of the negotiations.
The United States has been seeking changes that would improve access for American goods, while India has been assessing the impact of tariff concessions on domestic industries and its wider trade position.
The two sides also face differences related to the trade balance.
Sitharaman said negotiations should focus on reaching an agreement rather than using tariffs as the primary method of addressing trade deficits.
Piyush Goyal Also Involved in Talks
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been closely involved in negotiations with US officials.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has also indicated that a deal is not imminent, reinforcing the view that several major issues remain unresolved.
The latest comments therefore suggest that the negotiations are continuing but have reached a stage where additional compromises are proving difficult.
Why the Trade Deal Matters Politically
The India-US trade relationship has importance beyond economics.
The United States is a major destination for Indian exports, while India also seeks stable access to the American market for sectors ranging from manufacturing to services.
For the Indian government, any agreement must therefore balance export opportunities with the interests of domestic industries.
The negotiations also have a broader diplomatic dimension because India and the United States have been strengthening strategic ties in recent years.
No Final Agreement Yet
Despite the difficulties, the talks have not been formally abandoned.
The two countries continue to discuss outstanding issues, meaning the negotiating position could still evolve.
Sitharaman's comments indicate that India does not currently see unlimited scope for further concessions.
The next phase of negotiations will therefore depend on whether both sides can narrow their differences without requiring compromises that either government considers politically or economically difficult.
For now, the proposed India-US trade agreement remains under negotiation, with tariffs, market access and trade balance issues among the key areas requiring further discussion.
