INDIA Bloc Protest Today: Opposition Demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

The political confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission has intensified in Delhi, with the INDIA bloc stepping up its campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The latest mobilisation follows two consecutive days of protests in the national capital during which several opposition leaders, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained by Delhi Police.
The Opposition has linked its campaign to concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process. Opposition parties have argued that the exercise could result in eligible voters being excluded from electoral rolls.
The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected the Opposition’s allegations. The political dispute has nevertheless grown into a larger confrontation over electoral institutions and the credibility of the election process.
Opposition Plans Another Major Protest
The INDIA bloc has decided to continue its mobilisation in Delhi. Opposition MPs are expected to gather for another protest, with security arrangements tightened around areas including Jantar Mantar and Parliament Street.
The Opposition has maintained that its campaign will continue until its demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation is addressed.
Congress leaders have also sought a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to present their concerns regarding the SIR exercise and the Election Commission.
According to reports, a delegation of opposition leaders is expected to seek the President’s intervention.
Rahul Gandhi Maintains Pressure
Rahul Gandhi has emerged as one of the most prominent faces of the campaign. He has repeatedly accused the electoral system of failing to adequately address concerns raised by opposition parties.
The Congress has described the protests as a fight over electoral transparency and democratic institutions.
The BJP, however, has strongly criticised the Opposition’s approach. BJP leaders have accused Congress and its allies of attempting to undermine constitutional institutions after electoral setbacks.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin has also attacked Rahul Gandhi over the campaign, while Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticised what he described as repeated attacks on the Election Commission.
SP Absence Adds Another Political Dimension
The latest Opposition mobilisation has also exposed differences within the INDIA bloc.
The Samajwadi Party did not attend Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s recent lunch meeting for INDIA alliance leaders in Delhi. SP lawmakers had also maintained a separate position during an earlier Opposition mobilisation.
Congress has played down the development, saying the SP’s absence was related to the short notice for the meeting rather than a formal break with the alliance.
Nevertheless, the development has generated political discussion because the SP remains an important Opposition party, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.
A Larger Electoral Debate
The confrontation is now moving beyond a single protest. For the Opposition, the SIR controversy has become a larger political issue concerning voter inclusion and the functioning of the Election Commission.
For the BJP, the protests are being portrayed as an attempt by opposition parties to create political pressure on an independent constitutional institution.
The Election Commission has defended the electoral-roll revision process, while the Opposition continues to demand greater accountability and transparency.
With further protests planned, the dispute is likely to remain an important national political issue in the coming days.
