Akhilesh Yadav Picks Reliance Executive Dhanraj Nathwani for Rajya Sabha Polls

The Samajwadi Party (SP) has named veteran leader Ram Gopal Yadav and senior Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani as its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh.
While Ram Gopal Yadav's nomination was widely expected, Nathwani's selection came as a surprise and has attracted considerable attention because of his corporate and sports administration background. Both candidates filed their nomination papers in Lucknow on September 30, 2026, in the presence of SP president Akhilesh Yadav.
The Rajya Sabha elections for Uttar Pradesh are scheduled for October 16, with 10 seats from the State going to the polls.
Dhanraj Nathwani Emerges as SP's Surprise Candidate
Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani is a Group President at Reliance Industries and has also been involved in sports administration. His selection represents an unusual choice for a Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha nomination because he comes from a corporate and sports background rather than conventional electoral politics.
Nathwani's nomination was reportedly unexpected even within sections of the SP. The party had indicated that there could be a surprise in its Rajya Sabha nominations, and his name emerged as the second candidate alongside Ram Gopal Yadav.
Nathwani is also the son of Parimal Nathwani, a Rajya Sabha member from Jharkhand who has longstanding links with the corporate and political establishment.
Ram Gopal Yadav Set for Sixth Rajya Sabha Term
For the SP, Ram Gopal Yadav's nomination represents continuity.
A veteran leader and one of the party's important strategists, Ram Gopal Yadav is the uncle of Akhilesh Yadav and has remained a prominent figure in the Samajwadi Party's parliamentary politics.
He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha continuously since 2004 and is now seeking his sixth term in the Upper House.
His long parliamentary experience makes him an important part of the SP's national political and legislative strategy.
Akhilesh Yadav Accompanies Candidates
Akhilesh Yadav personally accompanied Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Nathwani when they filed their nomination papers in Lucknow.
The nomination event was also attended by SP leaders and legislators, including Shivpal Singh Yadav.
Akhilesh Yadav's direct involvement in the nomination process underlined the importance of the Rajya Sabha contest for the party.
Why Nathwani's Selection Has Drawn Attention
Nathwani's selection has generated political discussion because of his close association with the corporate sector and his long career at Reliance Industries.
Reports have described the choice as a strategic surprise, particularly because the SP has in recent years strongly emphasised its PDA — Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak — political formulation. However, the party has not publicly stated that Nathwani was chosen specifically to pursue a corporate or “resource-and-relationship” strategy.
Therefore, Nathwani's nomination is better understood as a notable expansion of the profile of people the SP is bringing into its parliamentary strategy rather than as a confirmed shift away from its PDA politics.
SP's Rajya Sabha Strategy Ahead of 2027
The Rajya Sabha nominations come at an important political moment for Uttar Pradesh, which is scheduled to hold its next Assembly election in 2027.
The SP is the principal opposition force in Uttar Pradesh and has been building its electoral strategy around the PDA coalition. At the same time, the party's choice of Nathwani brings a prominent corporate figure into its parliamentary plans.
The combination of Ram Gopal Yadav's political experience and Nathwani's corporate and sports-administration background gives the SP two distinctly different profiles among its nominees.
Contest for 10 Rajya Sabha Seats
The upcoming Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha election is expected to be closely watched because 10 seats are due for election on October 16.
The SP's current numbers, along with support from Congress, give the opposition alliance a position to secure seats, while the BJP-led alliance has the numbers to win a larger share of the available seats. The possibility of additional candidates has also added to the political suspense surrounding the contest.
The SP had also indicated that it could announce another candidate, adding another layer to the contest.
A Significant Move Before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Election
The nomination of Dhanraj Nathwani has made the SP's Rajya Sabha selection more closely watched than a routine Upper House nomination.
Ram Gopal Yadav's candidature represents continuity and parliamentary experience, while Nathwani brings a corporate and sports-administration profile to the party's Rajya Sabha team.
With the October 16 Rajya Sabha election approaching and the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election on the horizon, the SP's choices are likely to remain part of the wider political debate over Akhilesh Yadav's strategy, the party's alliances and its preparations for the next Assembly contest.
