AAP's Own MLA Exposing So-Called Education Revolution in Punjab: Tarun Chugh

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh on October 4, 2026, criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab over its education policies, claiming that concerns raised by one of the party's own MLAs have exposed the reality behind its much-publicised “education revolution.”
Chugh's remarks came a day after AAP MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana raised concerns about a shortage of teachers in some government schools in his home constituency of Maur in Bathinda district.
Chugh said the AAP had come to power in Punjab making tall claims about an education revolution. He questioned those claims by pointing to the concerns being raised by teachers and the shortage of teaching staff in government schools.
“This is the same party which came to power making tall claims about an education revolution. Today, teachers are on the streets raising their demands and facing police action,” Chugh said, according to the report.
The BJP leader used the remarks of the AAP MLA to target the Punjab government and question its handling of the education sector.
The issue is politically significant because education has been one of the areas prominently highlighted by the AAP government in Punjab. The concerns raised by an MLA from the ruling party provide the Opposition with an opportunity to challenge the government's claims about improvements in government schools.
The controversy also comes ahead of the Punjab Assembly Election 2027, when education, employment and public services are expected to remain important political issues.
For the BJP, Chugh's statement is part of the Opposition's broader criticism of the AAP government's performance in Punjab. The ruling party, meanwhile, is likely to face questions over teacher availability and other issues affecting government schools.
The immediate controversy centres on the concerns raised by Maiserkhana regarding teacher shortages in schools in the Maur constituency and the political response from the BJP.
Expert View
The political importance of the issue comes from the fact that the concerns over teacher shortages were raised by an MLA belonging to the ruling AAP. The development gives the Opposition an opportunity to question the government's education claims, particularly as education is likely to remain an important issue ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.
