Punjab Drug Crisis

Punjab's drug issue has once again become a major political topic ahead of the 2027 Assembly Election. The BJP and Congress are questioning the AAP government's handling of the issue, while AAP is defending its record by highlighting the history of the problem before 2022. The debate is likely to remain an important part of Punjab Politics as parties intensify their election preparations

Punjab’s 2027 Assembly contest is taking shape around competing campaigns on governance, welfare, drugs, agriculture and regional politics. AAP has begun a door-to-door campaign highlighting its government’s record, while BJP is conducting an anti-drug yatra across the state. At the same time, Congress, SAD and Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) are working to expand their organisational and political space ahead of the election.

Punjab’s 2027 political contest is increasingly centred on the drug crisis, with major parties using the issue to challenge rivals and strengthen their voter outreach. The BJP and SAD are pursuing separate anti-drug campaigns, while AAP and Congress are focusing on governance, past government records and the wider trafficking network.

Punjab's drug crisis has become a major political battleground ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, with the BJP's Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra, SAD's women-led campaign, AAP's statewide outreach and Congress's criticism putting drugs and trafficking at the centre of the political debate.

Political observers say the BJP's Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra should be viewed as both an anti-drug campaign and an effort to strengthen the party's grassroots presence ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.
