Jaipur, September 11, 2026: Rajasthan is witnessing the second and final phase of voting in its urban local body elections, with voters casting ballots across 147 urban bodies and 4,774 wards. The polling covers several major cities, including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Udaipur and Ajmer.
The elections have attracted considerable political attention as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress compete for influence in urban Rajasthan. The results are expected to provide an important indication of the parties' grassroots organisational strength.
Second Phase Sees Large-Scale Voting
Voting began at 7 am across the second phase, with more than 87 lakh registered voters eligible to participate. Around 18,266 candidates are contesting seats across the urban local bodies.
The first phase, held on September 9, recorded a turnout of 76.41%, according to reports. The strong participation has increased expectations surrounding the final results.
Maharashtra's decision to declare 265 talukas drought-affected has triggered questions from both ruling alliance leaders and the Opposition. While some areas represented by Mahayuti leaders have been excluded, the MVA has questioned the transparency of the assessment process.
The election represents an important test for the BJP government led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. A strong performance by the BJP would reinforce the party's organisational position in the state's urban areas.
For the Congress, the local elections (opens in a new tab) provide an opportunity to challenge the ruling party and demonstrate that it remains competitive at the grassroots level.
The outcome could therefore influence the wider Rajasthan Politics landscape and shape the strategies adopted by both parties in the coming years.
Controversies During Polling
The first phase of voting witnessed allegations of clashes, bogus voting and other irregularities in several areas. Reports also mentioned disputes involving political workers and candidates.
The BJP has also approached the Election Commission over an incident in which polling personnel were reported to have touched former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's feet while he arrived to vote. The BJP questioned whether such conduct was consistent with the neutrality expected from election officials.
The controversy has added another dimension to the already competitive local elections.
Local Issues at the Centre
Unlike Assembly or Lok Sabha elections, municipal contests are strongly influenced by local issues. Roads, drainage, sanitation, water supply, urban development and civic infrastructure are among the issues that can influence voters.
Candidates and parties have therefore focused heavily on local development while simultaneously highlighting broader political issues.
The elections are also an opportunity for smaller parties (opens in a new tab) and independent candidates to establish influence in individual wards.
What Happens After Voting?
Counting for the urban local body elections is scheduled for September 14. The results will provide a clearer picture of the political balance across Rajasthan's urban centres.
For the BJP, victories in major cities could strengthen the government's political standing. For Congress, gains in urban bodies would provide an important boost to its opposition campaign.
The results may also influence future Political Parties (opens in a new tab) strategies, particularly as both major parties begin preparing for the next major electoral contests in the state.
Rajasthan's urban local body elections are therefore more than a local contest. They represent an important test of party organisation, voter mobilisation and public sentiment, making the September 14 results significant for the state's political future.

The INDIA bloc has announced a nationwide campaign over concerns related to the Election Commission and electoral processes. The Opposition plans protests, a march to the Election Commission headquarters, and a legal challenge to provisions of the Chief Election Commissioner Act, 2023.
Discussions between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have intensified, with reports suggesting alliance talks and possible Cabinet representation. However, no official announcement has been made by either party.
With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election approaching in 2027, the Samajwadi Party and Congress are working to strengthen their alliance after their improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political observers believe the opposition has an important opportunity, but unity and effective seat-sharing will be crucial.
