Maharashtra Politics: Marathwada Water Crisis Intensifies as Tanker Demand Rises

Mumbai, September 21, 2026: Maharashtra's Marathwada region is facing growing water stress after prolonged dry spells during the monsoon season. As of September 20, rainfall in the region stood at around 71% of its seasonal average, compared with 85% for Maharashtra overall. Reservoir and dam water storage in Marathwada has fallen to about 46.19%, the lowest level among the state's regions.
The worsening situation has increased the need for water tankers across several districts. Tanker deployments have nearly doubled over the past two weeks as authorities respond to growing shortages in villages and other affected areas. Eight districts in the region are reported to be experiencing serious water stress.
Farmers Face Growing Water Stress
The rainfall deficit is also affecting agriculture across Marathwada. Crops including soybean, cotton, maize, tur and moong have been affected by the prolonged dry conditions. The situation has raised concerns among farmers as the region enters an important period for agricultural activity.
