BJP Attacks INDIA Bloc Over Key Leaders’ Absence, Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Leadership

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 30, 2026, criticised the INDIA bloc following its meeting in New Delhi, with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan questioning the opposition alliance’s unity and Rahul Gandhi’s acceptance as its leader.
Chouhan said the absence of several prominent opposition leaders from the meeting raised questions about coordination within the INDIA bloc. He specifically referred to the absence of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, DMK leaders, AAP representatives and the physical absence of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, who participated virtually.
Shivraj Chouhan Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Leadership
Reacting to the INDIA bloc meeting, Chouhan claimed that several alliance partners were not prepared to accept Rahul Gandhi as the leader of the opposition grouping.
He argued that if the meeting and its issues were considered important, leaders such as Akhilesh Yadav should have been present. Chouhan also questioned the absence of other major regional leaders and said the situation reflected differences within the alliance.
Chouhan described the outcome of the meeting as “zero vision, 100 per cent frustration” and alleged that the opposition was preparing excuses ahead of future elections. These are Chouhan's political claims and are not an independent assessment of the INDIA bloc's performance.
Why Akhilesh Yadav Was Absent
Akhilesh Yadav's absence became a major point in the BJP's criticism. However, reports said the Samajwadi Party president did not attend the meeting because of the ongoing Rajya Sabha nomination process in Uttar Pradesh.
Therefore, his absence by itself does not establish that he had rejected Rahul Gandhi's leadership. Chouhan presented it as evidence of differences within the alliance, while the reported reason given for Akhilesh's absence was his involvement in the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha nominations.
INDIA Bloc Meeting Focused on Election Commission Issues
The INDIA bloc meeting was convened to discuss a joint political programme concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the opposition's allegations regarding irregularities in the electoral process.
Congress leaders said the opposition parties remained united in raising concerns about electoral processes and constitutional institutions. The bloc also announced plans for a series of “Save Democracy” marches from October 2 to October 8.
The proposed programme includes opposition mobilisation over electoral-roll issues and demands concerning the Election Commission. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also outlined electoral-related demands at the meeting.
BJP Calls the Campaign a “Save Dynasty” March
Chouhan also criticised the INDIA bloc's proposed “Save Democracy” campaign, calling it a “Save Dynasty March.” He accused Congress and its allies of questioning constitutional institutions and the electoral process.
These statements represent the BJP's political criticism of the opposition alliance. Congress and other INDIA bloc parties have maintained that their campaign is aimed at protecting democratic processes and raising concerns about electoral rolls and the functioning of constitutional institutions.
Questions Over INDIA Bloc Unity
The latest exchange highlights continuing differences in how the Congress-led opposition alliance is being presented by its members and political opponents.
The BJP has focused on the absence of several regional leaders from the September 30 meeting as evidence of differences over leadership and coordination. At the same time, opposition leaders who attended the meeting continued to discuss a common programme on electoral issues and announced further public mobilisation.
Expert View
The September 30 developments show that leadership, coordination and electoral strategy remain important issues within the wider opposition space. However, the absence of individual leaders from one meeting should be distinguished from a formal decision by the INDIA bloc on Rahul Gandhi's leadership, particularly when different reasons have been reported for individual absences.
Current Status
As of September 30, 2026, the INDIA bloc has announced a programme of public mobilisation on electoral issues, while the BJP has used the absence of several major opposition leaders to question the alliance's unity and Rahul Gandhi's acceptance as its leader.
